Summary: Islamic religiosity has been always a topic of discussion among Muslim intellectuals, but I’ve never found a good index that includes all the different aspects and definitions for it. So, I decided to make such an index. Available Islamic religiosity data could be divided into four indexes: State religiosity, state anti-religiosity, personal religiosity, and political Islam indexes. Each of these indexes contains a set of factors such as the number of mosques per population, the number of people who do the Hajj pilgrimage…etc. Data collection took a few days and then I did some work on the results to explain them by different factors.
My view: Am I satisfied with the results? No. Why? I didn’t have enough data.
Highlights
- Countries with a near history of anti-religion regimes, such as ethnically Turkic countries, Balkan states, countries in more temperate climates, countries in the northern part of the Islamic world tend to be the least religious across all indexes. The groups with these features include: Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Albania.
- Countries with more arid areas tend to have higher scores in the state religiosity index.
- Countries with the majority of the population that had converted to Islam recently tend to be less religious both in personal and state indexes (with Bangladesh as an exception).
- GDP PPP has no effect on any of the indexes.
- Political alliances (eastern and western) don’t correlate with any of the indexes.
- The only factor that correlates with personal religiosity is that the more personally religious countries are on the opposite of what’s mentioned in (1)
- There are many issues in the indexes, mainly related to the lack of data and the difficulty to find data for all these countries.
- The work is done on 28 countries, selected from different regions and only from countries with a Muslim majority.
